All phenomena are based on energy transfer in some form.

Physics is the study of energy transfer.

Jules is correct about math being the fundamental structure of physics.

Physics is the foundation of all other sciences. All of the other sciences advance only because physicists unlock mysteries that are inherent to chemistry, biology, anatomy, astronomy, geology. Another way to view this is as a flow chart or family tree with Physics as the common ancestor and all the other sciences descending from it and investigating more specific phenomenon. Physics is an analysis of all motion and energy within space and time, whereas the other disciplines target a small part of our physical world.
Civilizations were built because the residents had an understanding of basic engineering for construction, fluid dynamics for water necessity, and motion for transporting goods and people. Until the 20th century, physics was the dominant science in our culture. The 20th century ushered in the age of chemistry, with advances in germ knowledge, medicines, and food production. Many believe the 21st century will be the age of biology, due to advancements in cloning and synthetic body parts

All sciences are equally important. Science is the study of phenomenons and method of inquiry (learning). Which science one specializes in depends on personality.

Physics has traditionally been considered a basic science for several reasons. Motions and lack of motion (stability) are considered the basis of all phenomenon, macro or micro. So physics provides a language to describe such elements of phenomenon. Math was introduced into physics to make the statements more compact, elegant, functional and easier for scientist to exchange information. Whether all scientific endeavors can be written in mathematical languages is still an on-going debate.

The concept of energy has become a rather important in last century because societal needs, the discovery of energy conservation law of thermodynamics, the invention of various engines, and the discovery of electron and atomic energy.

Energy conservation law provided a different perspective on physics problems. For example, the speed of a free falling particle pulled by earth gravity can be solved by Newton's law of motion or conservation of energy. Now we know that energy conservation is a compact way of stating Newton's law of motion.

physics is called basic science because it deals with the most fundamental basic natural laws... Physics deals with mass, energy, force , motion of both micro (atoms, electrons) and macro (car, stone) objects hence all other sciences also in a way derive from Physics
(Eg. Chemisrty = Interaction at atomic/ molecular level)

hence Physics is considered as Basic Science

if chem is the central science, physics is the basic science...
why?
in simple terms, physics is physical science. it is the study of energy and matter and how they interact with each other.
since everything is made out of matter (at least up to now that antimatters are not yet proven to really exist) then we could say that physics is basic.
