Well now there are some lame answers posted to this question. Gardner never performed well in college and that eliminates him. Bumgardner is a fairly good choice not much in college but superior in greco. Lastner was 2nd and 1st in his two years at MN, so you really can not count him. And some of the other choices are just lame. Now Cael Sanderson is by far a good choice at 159-0 in college but did lose a few in high school. Dan Gable was 181-1 in high schoold and college (losing his last macyh in college) and a world champion and olympic champion. Had no pints scored on him in the olympics. It is a toss up btwn Cael and Dan.

I'd have to say Bruce Baumgartner. He's a four time Olympic medalist and a two time Olympic gold medalist. He also led the US delegation in the Olympic games at Barcelona, which is saying a lot for any wrestler. He also led my alma mateur Indiana State University to a national championship in collegiate wrestling. He's also in the Hall of Fame. See some of the links below. He's accomplished more in Olympic and college wrestling competition than basically anyone in US history.

If you want to answer it in terms of best you have to go by record. Iowa State Cael Sanderson wrestled from 1998-2002 and won NCAA "Outstanding Wrestler" all four years as well as two Dan Hodge Awards. He went 159-0, never beat. I'd say undefeated puts him in the upper class.
