There are a few ways, depending on the error recieved.
Registry errors are generally fixed by using CCleaner.

Spyware/Malware/Virues can be fixed with antivirus and antispyware programs. Most notably:

http://www.lavasoft.com/
http://www.free-av.com/
http://www.webroot.com/
Broken software (bugs in regular software) are usually fixed by updating the software pages.
Windows comes up with updates every few days/weeks that make attempts to patch and remove bugs, so try updating Windows as well.

It really depends on your errors. Best solution, which half of the guys you pay 80$ to do it. is to reformat it, and start allover again. and if your computer is a namebrand one (i.e. compaq, dell, Logic..etc) it would of came with a bunch of CD's labeled "system recovery" those can always help you out 0=)
