I have the opportunity to take a year off to "travel" & would like to work at a resort to meet people & practice my spanish. Which resort would you recommend that treats their employees well, would be fun, educational & give me the opportunity to meet really great people? I'm considering Playa del Carmen, MX which is beautiful & I've been there before but they have a lot of rain & I'm a little worried about their hurricaine seasons. If you are from Playa del Carmen (Playacar) please let me know if you would recommend this move.

Would anyone recommend a particular resort in Mexico or has anyone worked at one of these resorts before & would they recommend it?

I think for language emersion it is a fabulous idea! BUT...I just got home from the Riviera Maya (Playa del Carmen) yesterday. I spoke with a few of the employees there about what brought them to the resort (a 5 star) and they responded it was for them to learn English. Many of them had the same story...13 hour work days (only paid for 8). They were given a place to live (a 13 x 16 room) that they shared with 2 other employees. They were given modest breakfast (2 cookies with milk), beans, rice, soup for lunch and dinner... behind the kitchen...not the same food given to the resort guests (not even the left overs).
The daily wage was between 20 and 50 pesos per day depending on your job. The bartenders and bellhops were lucky enough to get some tips (not required on this property) but were given a smaller daily wage because of the tip possibility. Many europeans did not tip (we watched this) as it was in the all inclusive plan.
SO...if you can live on peanuts due to having your own finances prior to going...LIVE IT UP AND ENJOY YOUR YEAR!!! I would love to live there for a longer time.
THe mexican people were warm, friendly, inviting, and honest. We met some of the most genuine loving people there. I wish you luck on your quest. Please look into the hurricane situation as the living quarters in Playa del Carmen are not structurly the same as in the US, Canada, Europe. Last year's hurricane already broke them down and they have not been fully rebuilt. Have a plan and talk in length to the hotel management about what is done for evacuation in case of hurricane landfall.
Besides for the technical aspects of the question...the Mayan Riviera (Playa del Carmen et al) is one of the most beautiful places on earth! Lush greens of the plant and tree life and bold blues and greens of the clear waters....I am jealous.
Be careful and enjoy yourself!

First, I'd like the same opportunity - and wish I had the funds to capitalize a 1 year vacation.
I love Spain - not necessarily a resort, but there is no better place on Earth to practice Spanish than in Spain itself. Like history? Try Madrid, or Granada. Like technology, try Barcelona or Sevilla. Want the beach? Go to Torremolinos, on the Spanish Riviera. Spain has it all, and would be my #1 choice for practicing Spanish, plus you'll have a great friggin' time.

PdC is the best, look no further. Cancun is 60K away if you really want to party out, Cozumel is across the bay, tons of Mayan ruins, scuba, etc, etc, you will never get bored, buy a Scooter and you have everything!

I think vegas would probably where you would get treated the best as an employee however I know little aobut Mexican resorts but I am guessing the bigger and more expensive ones can pay and treat their employees better.
