back in the days of slavery, slaves were beaten to the point that they couldn't control their bowels and would crap on themselves. thus, slavemasters coined the term "beat the crap out of..."

To beat someone to the point of submission if not injury. Crap is not necessarily involved. But come on - even if you aren't a native English speaker, this phrase pretty much explains itself.
