It's very possible. I tend to get "tender" on one side or the other around that time myself. Not long after, I have signs of ovulation. It will be in the middle of my cycle and the side alternates, which is what happens when you ovulate, as the ovaries "take turns" ovulating every month. My lower abdomin also get tender and sometimes my back gets a little sore. What exact day it occurs in your cycle depends on the length of your cycle, but since ovulation occurs around the 14th day of a normal 28 day cycle, that would give you five days before ovulation when you symptoms start. If you check into what exactly happens when you ovulate, you'll find that the ovary actually prepares as soon as your menstruation stops, and starts moving toward the surface of the ovary right around the time frame you're giving, therefore, it's not really early, I don't think. If you're in doubt, you can always contact your gynecologist, but I wouldn't worry about it too much... it sounds pretty normal judging from discussions with female friends.
On another note, if you're looking for ovulation, there are some resourceful websites that can help you learn the signs of ovulation.

If it's that consistent, it is probably related to your cycle. If it's only one day, it's probably ovulation. One way to be check without a doctor's visit is to buy an over the counter ovulation kit. If it last more than a day or two, it can also be a sign of endometriosis.
