I was recently given a hard drive which had been partitioned into 3 drives. I used partion magic (I think) to merge them into 1 but now its saying I have only 20% memory left but there are no programs on the machine. How can I restore it to 100%?

A hard drive doesn't display free space in term of memory. It is measured in bytes. If your hdd is 40gb for example, then the bytes total will be approx. 40,000,000,000 bytes.

Memory is a term used for your Ram Memory module. So either you are confused by what you are reading or you are misreading the info on display.

In the first place if the hdd already have data in all 3 partitions, the merging process does nothing to erase that data content for you. If it display 20% free space left - that would be correct anyway, since the data is still intact after merging the partitions!!

So the solution is simple - if you are using this hdd as a spare one as slave to your existing hdd in your pc - just reformat it to erase all contents and it will have 100% free space - not memory!

use fdisk and delete the existing partion the check your memory if the mem has changed then its the drive else using fdisk again create a new partion and activative, then format it.

if you memory is still playing up check on the number of applications and or processes that you machine is running. You can do this by press key combination Ctrl+Alt+Del. This will bring up the task manager amonst other things and you switch between the various tabs at the top to see the app you have running and processes running. then figure which you do and don't need running.

When you had 3 partitions to your hard drive it took up less ram because the computer was using 1/3 of the hard drive space now you have made taken the partitions out the computer is using all of the hard drive using up more ram and slowing things down. You Could try the old IT trick of adding more ram a huge processor and a tiny hard drive this make everything very fast and people think they have a really good computer and your really good at "Fixing" things.

Try clearing all partitions and reformatting the drive. If that doesnf't work the drive may require a low level format. Depending on drive manufacturer you may be able to get a utility to perform the process. Check manufacturer's website.

Depending on the size of the hard drive, the age of the BIOS on your PC, and the way if was formatted (FAT32 instead of NTFS), your computer may not be able to see the entire hard drive. Reformat the drive using NTFS and you should be able to see it all.

appears like better than sufficient. EDIT: Sorry, missed the quite-priced area. -21.5" computer screen somewhat (ASUS is often reliable high quality for the price) -again off on the processor somewhat. A center i5 would probable be merely wonderful -check out G.potential for the RAM. they are oftentimes less intense priced, yet large high quality -verify diverse variety of SSD? Intel is often better than others -you would elect an quite HDD as well, in case you prefer to positioned a collection of video games on it.
