There are many online resources for that..
some are legal and some illegal...
The most famous legal one is Gutenberg Project (http://www.promo.net/pg/query.html).. but it mainly contains literature books..
other resources are
http://digital.library.upenn.edu/books/lists.html
http://ftp.std.com/
