The Three Musketeers are a fictitious band of soldiers from a novel written by Alexandre Dumas, a French novelist from just after the French Revolution days. They were charged with protecting the king, just as the Secret Service today is charged with protecting the President.
But just remember, the Three Musketeers are nothing more than the product of Alexandre Dumas' imagination; they are no more real than any other story.

Alexandre Dumas père (a French writer) wrote a novel that was called "The Three Musketeers (Les Trois Mousquetaires).
The main character is a young man called d'Artagnan (he leaves home to become a musketeer). D'Artagnan is not one of the musketeers of the title; those are his friends Athos, Porthos, and Aramis.
