Why is David Beckham famous so much?

Ever heard of "bend it like Beckham"? It means he can "bend" the way the ball goes in the air when he kicks it (good for getting around defenders on free kicks). And of course, he's hot and associated with many celebrities (Posh Spice).

David Beckham is famous because he is gorgeous and married to a former Spice Girl. He is also considered the best foot ball player in the world.

He was just in the right place at the right time. When he was coming up in the mid 90s, he was the most exciting prospect England had seen in a long time. One might also say he was the first English superstar to develop in the newly formed Premier League (Giggs is welsh and Shearer was already established). He was part of the unstoppable Man United dynasty of the 90s and was the face of the famous class of youth players (Neville, Neville, Butt, Scholes, Beckham). In addtion, football at this time was being commercialized like never before and suddenly here you have this good looking very talented player on the best team in England. He became the obvious choice for football posterboy. Then he went and married a spice girl, boosting his tabloid appeal even more. Unfortunately for England, posh ruined his motivation and turned him from one of the worlds top 5 players to merely a very good one. For some mysterious reason, he retained his celebrity even though his form at Madrid was nothing special.

You've got me...supposedly he's one of the best soccer players there but here in the U.S. no one really cares about soccer and he's never in the media.
