Living things have growth and metabolic activities
Non living does not have any growth.

living ex-> man,plants,fish,etc.
non living ->building,stone,car,etc.

Living = anything that can express the characteristics of life

non-living = anything that does not express the characteristics of life


Characteristics of Life =

need nutrition for energy/growth/repair/maintenance

are able to move without external help

are able to reproduce

respond appropriately to external stimulus

Living things can talk, move, eat,smell and other activities whereas non livings cannot do any of these.
Living respond to stimulus whereas non livings don't.
Living exhibit characteristics or life whereas non livings don't.

Rather simple. Living is alive. Non living is either dead or never alive.
Living implies metabolism and is traditionally divided into either plant or animal. I am unclear however about virus.

I would say a living thing is a living thing because it metabolizes and reproduces.
