its a traditional sign that shows how much of value the man is willing committment to be with her to buy her something expensive/rare. Its materialistic, but if you think about it, it is a sign to know if he's serious about being with you for the rest of your lives.

I think a diamond is a very precious stone i suppose it signifies how precious, and beautiful the man thinks his lady to be, but also it signifies just how bright this mans love burns for this woman, and also because it is one of the most expensive stones, this also shows the woman that eventhough no price can be put on her, that she is worth every penny, so when a woman is called or given a diamond it shows she has rare, and beautiful qualities that shine beyond the rest of any other, in a way its as if she is likened to this beautiful stone.

Because usually a man giving a ring to a woman, expensive or not, means they are proposing for mairriage (not sure on spelling) and you are SUPPOSED to get married when you find the one you love. So the ring would be a sign of love. I thinkn it's a ring because something about the perfect circle representing eternity. And the diamond is the hardest known mineral to man, so usually it is the most expenisive.
