Linus Pauling - Structure of polypepeptides, and before Watson and Cricks stroke of genius, was working on elucidating the structure of DNA (he proposed a triple helix with nitrogenous bases on the periphary).

Fred Sanger - Developed the currently preffered chain terminator method of DNA sequencing in 1975

Sidney Brenner - Nobel Laureate 2002, dscovered mRNA in 1960, but is more famous for his work on development in nematods, especially in establishinng how Apoptosis (programmed cell death) is important in determining cell fate

I am sorry, i just forgot the name, but in high school they taught us about this biolobist who had his father almost dying and so he was encouraged to find about his dads sickness and while doing this he discovered the penicillin and i think that his name is also something like penicillin. His life is really a nice story you should look him up.
