There is none. sorry.

Any and all forms of a living creature needs care. And to expect that a 10 year old would be responsible enough to continuously maintain that care is crazy. Mom and Dad would have to do it from about the second day on.

The minimal care pets are usually the ones that you really can't do anything with. Therefore the children lose interest fast.

This leaves the good ole dog. Put down food and water, and clean up the back yard. You can play with them, hold them, pet them, teach them tricks, and just enjoy the companionship. Plus they help protect the house, if not guarding it by at least barking to let you know something is going on.

There are some breeds of dogs that shed very little, which I would recommend for you so you don't get upset about dog hair.
Just do some research before you get one.
If you are lucky you may find one in the news paper that someone is giving away for free.
Why is that lucky? It may be house broken already !!!

Big plus there...

Praying mantis - Super easy to care for, fairly or very cheap depending on the species and you usually only need to feed them every 2-3 days. They don't bite either, even when a mantis is very startled/scared, it normally just runs or flies away, I've never been bitten or seen anyone been bitten before. There's also some really nice looking species out there, like the pink Orchid Mantis which also resembles a flower, the Ghost Mantis which is blackish brown, looks a bit like a leaf and has a 'horn' on its head, the Spiny Flower Mantis which is white with a thorny body, and there's countless other species to list. But as with all pets, there are cons: 1. You need to feed them live food, it's the movement that attracts them and they'll ignore dead prey. You can usually feed them flightless fruit flies or crickets, depending on their size/age. 2. They don't live too long, only about 6-12 months. 3. They don't do much, they're perfectly happy to just hang upside down on a twig/plant in their enclosure for hours on end. 4. They won't love you back, nor can you teach them any tricks and you can't really interact a great deal with them other than allowing them to walk on your hands/arms.

Seriously, a pet rock.
10 years old is not old enough to be responsible for another living thing. If you as a parent are not willing to take care of the animal then please do not get one. What will happen is your kid will be all excited at first, then become bored with it, then ignore it, then it will end up in an animal shelter.

It happens time and time and time again.

Goldfish are cheap and pretty easy to care for, but please make sure he IS caring for it -- not just dumping food in whenever he happens to think of it. Goldfish also need clean water, so he will have to change the water if there is no filter -- and overfeeding can be just as bad as underfeeding.

No matter which pet you choose, discuss care with your son. Make a schedule, and check in with him to make sure he's following it. Having a pet is a great learning experience if the parent keeps an eye on the situation.

If you're not willing to take care of a pet, you shouldn't get one -- any kind. A ten yr old is not responsible enough on his own to fully care for a pet. So, when he doesn't do it properly, you'll need to show him what to do. If you're not willing to do that, animals are not for you. They are not a "thing" like an iPod. They are living creatures, with feelings.

you should get a fish cuz they dont require much care and no training! i have a dog and two cats, and its not very cheap, but they offer great companionship, much more than a fish can. my pets have become three of my best freinds!
