You are asking one of the most difficult questions in theology. God is said to be omnipotent and good. So if he's good, why did he allow those innocent children to die in the tsunami? Or the little girls who were raped, tortured and killed by Mark Dutroux in Belgium? If he couldn't prevent it, he's not omnipotent. If he could but wouldn't, he's not good. Faith is not to be explained by logic, religion cannot be proved scientifically. If it could, there would be no atheists in this world. You either take this on faith - or you don't.

You are right that God is neither good or bad. He is absolutely good. Because He is absolute, everything that He does is for the ultimate benefit of all of His creations. There are no bad things in His (not Its!!!) creations. If we misuse them instead of using them in His service, then we will be punished by material nature and that is also good, ultimately.
So, whatever God does is for the best. If one becomes consciouss of God he/she/it will be able to experience the love that God feels for us and is blessing us from time immemorial.

God is good because He always has the best intended for everyone, but we do the negative things to ourselves and each other. God takes care of the mess we have made by making it help someone in some way.

God is neither.... good or bad.
In his world there is no such thing. What is good or bad only pertains to us in this world where time has some meaning and only if you choose to look at things in the short run. If you choose to look at things in the long run, what is good and bad can loose its significance for us to. You have heard the saying, "In a hundred years who is going to care"; same difference.
VERY IMPORTANT: Keep in mind, that even if there is no such thing as good or bad, actions and behaviors still have consequences; pray you can live with them.

God is good no matter what. i just don't undersand why the government is trying to take Him out of everything! =(
there are bad things in His creations so it teaches us lessons. And sometimes it's to test our belief/trust in Him. He doesn't want to kill us just because he is pwoerful, he deos so for a reason: to teach us lessons. SOmething good can come out of it. THe bad things are from Satan, God lets Satan let bad things happen to teach us lessons. Like 911- It's to wake us up and relise GOD IS GOOD!

God is awesome and perfect. But if you had all good in your life, you would not know it unless you felt the bad. You can enjoy the good a lot more because you know about bad. God is truely the greatest.

A more pressing question is that if God created good and evil, then surely being "evil" is doing God's will, and therefore not evil at all.
Also, doesn't the fact that God has created and planned everything negate free will, and if so, does it not follow that, since we have no free will, "Good" and "Evil" can not exist?

Well, to get the answer you need to have knowledge on three specific word. They are - 'good', 'bad', and obviuosly 'God'.
This time to understand follow from the last. i.e., Understand 'God' first. To understand 'God' you need belief in 'God' at your own knowledge-level. (dont worry, about your knowledge-level. its unique for all of us). Once you understand 'God' - I am sure - you yourself realise that 'Good' and 'Bad' words are two terms given to qualities of life. Qualities of life differ from one aspect to other. So, in one particular aspect frame - 'Good' and 'Bad' coexists and then you will realise that they are a kind of synonymus. So what is 'God'? Good or Bad?
God is now the knowledge and realisation you have after these steps and You are the only one to term them either as 'Good' or as 'Bad'. At that level of expereiences you will say 'God is Good' for benefit of others. You will say 'God is Bad' - and again for some typical type of benefits for others.
My Friend - God is that Good to make you feel God; God is that Bad to make you feel confused! GOD IS GOOD - n - BAD - both together! :-)

God is a totally free spirit. He has free will but not like us who are limited by our weakness, His will is totally free. He is good because he chose to be good not because he is solely good by nature or else he would just not help being anything but good. In his total freedom he chose to be totally good.
The bad things we see around us are usually caused by human error. Poverty, inequality, injustice are caused by human fault who make wrong choices with their free will.
If by bad things you mean natural disasters, that's just the earth evolving. It's neither good nor bad, just a natural process.
