As a former leader of student abroad groups, I can say it is a wonderful, enlightening, life-changing experience for most. But it is not for everyone! The one factor that can make the difference between a good and a bad experience is the person's mindset. If you go expecting to party and get laid, chances are that's all you'll get out of the trip and you'll eventually regret not immersing yourself more in the culture. If you go in order to enrich your own life and soak up another culture, then that's what you'll do! Be prepared to laugh at yourself, make mistakes, get lost, and be humbled.
For students, Language skills are important; know the language and a lot about the culture before you go. Try to work the study abroad year/semester into your normal class-load so that you don't have to take upper-division classes when you study abroad. It's much easier to take a simple math class or even start another language while studying abroad than it is to take advanced psychology or sociology, etc. Most of my former students have taken theatre or music classes while abroad and have found those to be wonderful experiences.
The best thing to note is this: make friends and travel whenever you get the chance! don't get stuck in a rut at your school; find a host family/friend who is willing to take you to fun places that you wouldn't normally hear about. Have fun and take TONS of pictures!!!!

Why study abroad

Indian student have a fascination for study abroad, but not all students go abroad for the same reasons and nor do they gain the same benefits. What students achieve from an experience abroad is largely dependent upon their mind-set, their motivation, and most notably, their aspiration. Studying abroad definitely challenges you on a personal level. Whether you consciously realize it or not, you develop a greater self-confidence, independence, and self-reliance. By the time you return home, you may feel like a super hero: You can do anything!

So why should you study abroad?

Here are some important reasons:
You want to acquire or improve foreign language skills. You would like to gain cross-cultural experience, learn to accept, get appreciate, and benefit from cultural and historical differences which shape lifestyle, way of thinking, politics, technology, and all other aspects of a foreign country. You would like to benefit from courses, which are not available on our country/state/city in order to discover an interest derived outside of the major area of study.

You'll enhance your career opportunities in the GLOBAL MARKETPLACE.

Employers today are looking for individuals who have experience and knowledge above and beyond their area of study. And companies, which are expanding their markets abroad, need employees with international experience, foreign language skills, and the capacity to function successfully in cross-cultural settings.

Learn about yourself, be independent

Studying abroad is an occasion to challenge yourself with new situations that will test your abilities to adapt and learn. You may find yourself questioning some of your most long-held beliefs. All you need to succeed is an open mind and a good sense of humor. The perspective gained through a study abroad experience is second to none.

It's a chance to gain perspective on your own culture

Studying abroad is a chance to step outside of the ordinary and look at life from a completely new perspective. Many students return amazed that while studying abroad they learned just as much about the United States and its culture as they did about life in their host country.

Studying Abroad is a chance to gain true language fluency

The only way to truly become fluent in a language is to be immersed in it. If you've studied a language for several years and wish to gain fluency in that language, study abroad option can offer you the opportunity to gain fluency in a number of languages.

Resume building material

What could possibly look better on a resume than to boast that you interned or part time worked with a Japanese railroad company, studied marine biology on the coast of Australia, or that you designed and conducted your own research project in Thailand? In today's global economy, study abroad can be a defining element to every student's undergraduate degree. Many companies increasingly desire leaders with the ability to live successfully in a variety of countries and work with co-workers of varying cultural backgrounds.

Many programs offer unique academic structures

Studying abroad offers you the opportunity to escape the monotony of power lectures by providing programs that have a myriad of academic possibilities. Some examples of this are doing biology research in Costa Rica, performing a business internship for a Japanese railroad company, dance and theatre classes in Canada, social work opportunities in Kenya, interning with British Parliament, or designing your own academic fieldwork project in US and many many more.

Why be just another tourist?

Studying abroad is your chance to travel and gain perspective at the same time (not to mention academic credit). So many people travel abroad and "see the sights" without understanding the greater importance or significance of those places or events. By studying abroad you get to spend a great deal more time overseas, and thus have the opportunity to ask a lot more in-depth questions.

Make connections that can last a lifetime

The friends and acquaintances that you make will help you throughout your life. Add an international component to your Dipawali card list, learn about the cute little coffee shop that most tourists never see, hear about job opportunities available around the world. You can make the rest of your life as colorful, eventful, and as interesting as you want.

Now is the time to start establishing the pathways of your future.
