Here are 5 choices for Windows - for Macs, to the best of my knowledge, there are no freeware products.
AVG, AVAST!, Antivir, BitDefender, ClamWin.
For Linux, there are also some products that are free for home use::
AVG, AVAST, BitDefender, F-Prot.

The problem with the free anti virus protection is that they do not remove all of the viruses out there.
I had a free one and it said it had removed the virus but it came back;
which in reality was that it was not really removed.
Was able to get rid of it permanently with a bought anti virus.

First of all, one of the easiest wey to stop online attacks is, STOP USING INTERNET EXPLORER. Ever noticed that add ons can be attached to that particular browser only. As well it uses ActiveX controls, whether you need it not. which allows your computer to be identified. Both Netscape and the latest versin of Firefox gives you the option to use ActiveX when it's actually needed.
Secondly, I would not recommend AVG to anyone. It's crappy and useless. I know from having to deal with repairs on infected systems that ran AVG. I would recommend AntiVir Personal edition, whic 100% free, updates and all. http://www.free-av.com.
This is what Linux users use when compelled to run Windows.
The recommendation to use Spybot, I totally agree with, it is the only Spyware/Adware program that identifies and removes Trojans.

Try http://free.grisoft.com for free AVG download.
This is a cut down version of their premium version but does have regular free updates, scheduled scanning and an excellent e-mail scanner which work with most e-mail clients like Outlook, Incredimail etc...
