Here it's considered a "wussy" sport. Nobody cares about the World Cup. None of my friends, family, or even people on the streets. Is it really a Latino thing?

ha ha. I had this same discussion at work. A soccer fan said it's the best sport to have globally because it's economical for all social classes to participate in. However, the other guy said, "But it's a wimp sport. All they do is just fall down and it takes forever for them to kick the ball."

firstly, where is 'here'?

now soccer is definitely not a wussy sport and absloutely NOT a latino thing. people from all over the world play football (or soccer) and some say it originated from china, which is, read: an asian country.

why everyone is making a big deal about soccer is probably because of a global phenomenon called the world cup fever, which only strikes once evey 4 years. given the length of time between each world cup it's understandable that people from all around the world are excited by it, not to mention unified by feelings of patriotism for their competing country. soccer is a dynamic game, everything from joy, sorrow, anger is felt. it brings out the best - and sometimes the worst - of people. it's a universal language, a well-played game is like a musical masterpiece which sparks off conversations and confrontations between total strangers. we enjoy watching it, love to talk about it, emulate what we see on the big screen, we want to be the people up there playing their guts out only for joy, glory and honor. (and sometimes money, though not here at the world cup)

and if none of your friends, family, or even people on the street care about something that has been in the planning for more than 4 years, then perhaps you could be the one to show them why it is called the beautifuil game. after reading this, of course.

enjoy the world cup.

Soccer is played around the world and has been for ages.

To the rest of the world soccer is as big as our NFL football is to us. So this is why there is such a big deal about it.

The reason why you are hearing a lot more of it now than ever before is because of the great improvements in the television broadcasting. They are using the satellites, fiber optics, Etc. This allows them to bring in a quality signal for the people to view the game.

Also this is becoming a favorite sport of the kids mostly because of it's fast pace action, and no need for a lot of equipment. Two goals marked in the field and a ball.
You don't need pads, helmets, mouthpieces etc.

And if there is any sport that will get the kids up out of their seats and become active, then I will support it as well.

You are really out of touch with the rest of the entire world every country is into this except America. The world cup is the Super Bowl to the rest of the world they have wars based on football matches where they come from it is very serious and rooting for their team is a big thing. I don't think it's a wussy sport you should get out there and try doing it yourself. They don't understand why American football you guys have a play then stop for five min then have another play and stop for five min they think it's boring. So it all comes in the perspective and there are more Countries in the world than America and no If you look at the news you know there are other countries involved that are not Latin. Please look out there I have myself looked at the news to understand more what the other perspective is rather than writing it off as stupid.

First of all it is not Soccer!
It is called football and yes it was called football before there were americans in the first place and it is played with a person's foot unlike american football.

Second, it is not a latino thing, it is a world thing. Football is the number 1 sport in the world by far and that is why everyone outside the states is watching and is interested in.
By the way, it is the number one global sports event, it is bigger in terms of viewership and money than any winter or summer olympics and any other sporting event that can come to your mind.

No it;s not a "Latino thing". It's a world thing. 1.2 Billion people world wide are watching. The US doesn't like it as much because they can compete at the level required to succeed in the sport. I guess that would make " them" a wuss !

Superbowl, World Series, NHL Finals are all played within the same country and those are the sports most popular in the States ( and Canada) . They compete against themselves, not the rest of the world.

Soccer ( football ), is a WORLD WIDE event.

It's a big deal everywhere in the world, not just a latino thing. It's extremely popular in Europe. It's not really a "wussy" sport, it's just most Americans are too lazy to do all the strenuous physical activity the sport requires for long periods of time without breaks.

Yes, it's big deal. It's not only Latino, it's whole the world thing. Only the Americans don't care about World Cup ( by the way, do you know your team also participate, loosing of course). And it's not soccer, it's football.

Most popular sport in the world. Very demanding physically and there are mental chalanges as well. Deffinately a skill set required and an accomplished player is to be admired. If more children were raised to play soccer, there would be far less obisity in North America.

I'm not sure where you live in the US, but in the Northeast football (Soccer) has steadily been gaining popularity and is played by most kids in my town. As far as it being a "wussy" sport, I'm not sure what constitutes that opinion unless its compared directly to American Football and the use of force. There's no contact in baseball but I don't see too many people calling that a wussy sport. Also, your average footballer/soccer player is in far better physical condition than your average baseball player.or overweight defensemen in American Footbal...Now that being said, I'd still rather watch a Red Sox game than a soccer game, but thats just personal preference.

Your parents probably don't have coverage for the ER, which could be very expensive, and some ER's and medical insurances don't consider muscle tears an emergency. One more day to go to the doctors isn't so bad. Meanwhile, she should put ice on it, no more than 15 minutes at a time and get plenty of rest. Good Luck!
