It is not an issue with Windows like some of the others said. This is actually a extremely common problem on all brands of laptops that are 1 to 4 years old. The power inverter for the back lights have burned out. This is only about a $20 to $60 part, and you may even be able to use one from a different laptop (considering that the screens for all brands of laptops are only made by 3 or 4 different companies). This is not a repair that I recommend anyone try unless they are an experienced technician, those inverters carry extremely high voltages, sometimes even when the system is off and has no battery installed.

I would recommend taking it to a local used computer store that also dose repairs, they might have the part from another system that they parted out. Otherwise just about any repair shop can fix it, they will most likely have to order the part and it will take up to a week to get it back. You can expect to have to pay between $80 and $140 to get this repaired though.

Windows wont be causing the problem that you are having. The problem occurs during post and bootup of the machine, before windows even starts coming up. Chances are the LCD on the laptop is going out or a cable came loose and causing the problem (that is if you have already adjusted the brightness contrast etc.) Another thing you could try is to see if there is an updated video driver for the video card in that laptop. But I wouldnt go through the hassle of a reload without talking to IBM support, if its a new laptop. You should have a warranty on it.

If its a TOTAL blank screen, I mean even after increasing the brightness, still you cant see anything. I think the windows need to be re-installed properly. Further, as its a new Laptop you can call IBM customer support & take their advise immediately. Take customer care no. from IBM website. Sure they will help you in a best way.

IBM hasn't made laptops for over 5 years. They offered their pc branch to Lenovo. Even till now the sale, Lenovo were making the laptops for IBM for numerous years and branding them as IBM. you could purchase used IBM Thinkpads on ebay.

The likely cause of your problem is hardware related. It is possible that brightness of the laptop was adjusted accidentally. You can read the manual and see how to adjust the brightness back to the way you deem suitable. Usually it is with a combination of blue "function key" plus the key with "brightness" symbol in blue color on IBM. I guess they did not call themselves "big blue" for nothing, hence the blue colors on the function keys :).

SMe of the IBM laptops also may have a "slider" on the side of the display, or possibly a thumb wheel to adjust the brightness
