I am hooked onto Internet via a dial up connection. However, I have not launched Internet explorer (or similar programme like Mozilla). In other words, I have not opened any browser window. Yet, status shows data being received and sent. In fact, data being received is substantially high (100 times) that sent data. Where is this data being received and downloaded, if I have not downloaded any page?

It can be a spyware, adware, malware anything, which is taking users info like browsing habits, logging frequency etc or installing some more adwares. Then you need to install a yahoo toolbar with anti-spy. Download it from toolbars.yahoo.com. Scan twice a week to remove them.

Its possible your anti-virus update is running automatically to update anti-virus. It can also be window update going in the background. For these auto updates of software its not necessary to open internet explorer page.
