People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is a prominent animal rights organization. Founded in 1980, it has its headquarters in Norfolk, Virginia, United States, a stated over one million members[1], and over 100 employees worldwide.

PETA operates under the principle that animals are not to eat, wear, used for work or servitude, experiment on, or use for entertainment. In support of that position, it focuses on four core issues: factory farming, vivisection or animal testing, fur farming, and animals in entertainment.[1]

PETA also deals with other related animal rights issues, such as fishing, the killing of animals regarded as pests, pet abuse, and **** fighting. It works through public education, undercover investigations, research, animal rescue, legislation, special events, celebrity involvement, and protest campaigns.[1]

PETA strongly advocates a vegan lifestyle.

now that you've heard from 2 peta hacks that repeated the offical line its time for a reuttal. peta is also linked to eco terrorism groups and is often involved in illeagle acts such as breaking and entering and releasing farm animals. for the most part their members fall into 2 groups. the largest is made up of bambi lovers that know nothing about either nature or human interaction with animals but think that animals are cute little fuzzy people that all get together in the woods clearings at night to hold dances and talk. the second bunch is militant and dangerous. they spike trees, slash tires and brake lines on logging trucks and other distructive acts. they really believe that there is no moral difference between killing a human and an animal and that if it is necessary to kill a person to save an animal's life it is morally justified. the group has a history of doing one thing while saying something else. there was a case earlier this year of peta accepting money from people to find homes for their unwanted pets and them killing the pets and dumping their bodies in various trash dumpsters. peta has tried to blow it off as the actions of a couple of members but its not the only case like this. i believe them to be anti captalist, anti business, and anti freedom. tieir vision of the perfect state is rather like lenin's and just as unworkable. avoid them and do not give them money. they are not your friend.

actually the peta.org site does NOT tell *everything* about them. It tells what they want you to know. Look at some of those other links - when PeTA folks were caught dumping bodies of dogs the head of PeTA was concerned for their reputation - not for dumping dog bodies. Read some of the other links too - look at ALL SIDES. They don't help animals nearly as much as they help themselves. Their mission - end animal use.

PETA is about control; they've put to sleep many animals themselves. They're linked to the ALF, a violent animal rights group. They're linked to people who have committed domestic terrorism - and they deny such links but if you believe that firebombing a university is a simple act of civil disobedience then I guess you can believe that - the fact is they paid $57k+ of the legal fees for someone who did just that. (How many dogs/cats could be spayed for $57k?)

They want animals used for NO purpose. Not in movies. Not in sport. Not for food or clothing - whether or not the animal dies. It's been said shearing sheep is illegal too - but in many areas without being sheared the sheep's wool traps heat and the animal can die of heat stress. They do not care about children and in fact target children with campaigns to shock and get them to bring their message home to families. They've equated feeding kids meat with child abuse.
If they stand to gain financially their "ethical principles" go out the window. (see source1)
They'll take things done years ago and represent it being done today - to get people to donate $.
"(If) these animals do have the same right to be free from pain and suffering at our hands, then of course we are going to be, as a movement, blowing stuff up, and smashing windows. For the record, I don't do this stuff, but I do advocate it. I think it's a great way to bring about animal liberation. And considering the level of the atrocity and the level of the suffering, I think it would be a great thing if, you know, all of these fast-food outlets and these slaughterhouses and these laboratories and the banks that fund them, exploded tomorrow. I think it's perfectly appropriate (applause) and I think it's perfectly appropriate for people to take bricks and toss them through the windows and, you know, everything else along the line. Alleluia to the people who are willing to do it."

Bruce Friedrich, PETA Vegetarian Campaign Coordinator, at Animal Rights 2001 National Conference in McLean, Va., July 2, 2001

In Norfolk, Virginia, from 1998 through the end of 2003, PETA killed over 10,000 dogs, cats and other pets. That is more than five defenseless animals every day. Not counting the dogs and cats PETA spayed and neutered, the group put to death over 85% of the animals it took in during 2003 alone. These are animals that were supposed to be placed with caring and loving homes. This is their promise. (source below)
Then it's justified -
"We are not in the home finding business, although it is certainly true that we do find homes from time to time for the kind of animals people are looking for. Our service is to provide a peaceful and painless death to animals who no one wants."
-- Ingrid Newkirk, PETA President, The Virginian-Pilot, July 20, 2005

Why is this done? So that all those animals - thousands - can become a statistic of how many "unwanted" animals there are.

In other words - they can kill whatever animal they want (although they claim they don't harm animals or people) but forbid you to collect eggs from a chicken for breakfast and milk a cow or goat for ice cream.
And when people don't listen to the claims there's another way to get attention - they take their clothes off

They also have indirect links with SHAC - those people recently in the news after years of harassment of a particular company. Not direct links - oh no that would affect $$$ - but they are a big supporter of a like minded organization that DOES support SHAC. (see source link below)
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) said it will begin a global boycott of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) to seek an improvement in the lives and deaths of 700 million chickens who become the food chain's meals every year. This week, the group said it would pass out stickers and fliers in Louisville, Ky.; Toronto; London and Bombay to pressure the chain to change how chickens are raised in large factory farms in the U.S. and around the world. Among the suggestions are to improve the diets of breeder hens and to gas chickens to sleep before they are slaughtered. According to the National Chicken Council (http://www.eatchicken.com), a proper concern for animal welfare is already well established in the broiler chicken industry. "High-quality food can be made only from high-quality animals that have been properly cared for," NCC said in a press statement. "PETA's objective is not to improve animal welfare but to eliminate the use of food from animal sources. It will say or do anything to achieve this objective. It even approves the use of violence," NCC said. " PETA's campaigns must be seen in light of its willingness to bend or totally ignore the truth in pursuit of its objectives."
