I can think of at least four prime candidates for the title! If you've got time, could you put a few words on why it's so odious as well please? Thanks.

Either "The Sun" or "News Of The World" would get my vote! They both need to realize that there's more going on in the world than what the Royals' are up to or who the latest Britpop star is shagging. They both deal in gossip and sensationalization, not NEWS. Hell, far as I'm concerned, the only thing The Sun has going for them is the Page Three Girl, which is likely why most people -men at least- buy the thing...sad commentary. Both of these rags might be good if you've run out of T.P., but I always read The Evening Standard and The Guardian...

Gee...as a self-aware British journalist, that's a tough one.
There are candidates that are almost too obvious: The Sport being the most heinous in terms of its (excuse me while I cough up a lung laughing) news values. But the point about the Sport is that it KNOWS what it's about, and doesn't even really pretend to be a newspaper - it's a comedy rag for the sex-obsessed, societally-repressed British male.

Moving into "proper" tabloid territory, the People's pretty nasty and celebrity-driven, though the People is often forgotten because when you think trashy tabloid, most people immediately think of the Sun. Maybe because it's shorter and easier to spell.

The Mirror and the Star of course pander to the same audience as the Sun, but the Mirror has a history of sobering up and flying right at crucial moments, as though caught unawares by events and remembering it's a newspaper. The Sun remains top of the daily tabloid pile of odium, because it mixes its tabloid sensibilities with a 'rod of iron' political agenda that convinces its readers that if they like reading the Sun they should think the way the Sun thinks - perhaps the reason why it's political editor Trevor Kavannagh has been judged to be one of the most influential voices in British journalism.

But above and beyond the simple deceptions of the Sun, the crown of odure must surely sit squarely on the masthead of the Daily Mail. Essentially it pulls the same trick as the Sun does - "Do you like this snappy writing? You must think immigrants should be deported then, because after all, it's only reasonable, isn't it?"

That's the key word in the Mail's repulsiveness - reasonable. Whereas the Sun does its damage by making the association between topless women and football and a political standpoint, the Mail actually preaches that its political philosophy is the only reasonable way for its readers - who tend to be comfortably off - to think, and vote.

I'd laugh about it if it wasn't so depressing - both my parents are Mail readers, and have been increasingly swayed away from mainstream Conservativism to wishing there was a BNP candidate they could vote for. Naturally, as a Guardian-waving socialist, I'm a great disappointment to them. But then the Daily Mail is a great disappointment to journalism, so I guess that makes us equal.

The Sun (still because of it's coverage of the Hillsborough disaster) and the rest of the red tops - scurrulous rags all of them.

Plus the newspaper of the far right, the Daily Mail, and it's poor imitator the Express.

As far as I'm concerned there's only one paper worth reading and that's the Guardian (and Observer on Sunday of course).

I don't even have to think before giving my answer. THE GUARDIAN OF COURSE. It only seems to circulate around the public sector, particularly education. I know that that is not a reason per se but it's so left wing and anti democratic, anti capitalist etc. It sells an awful lot of copy abroad and , I believe, loses money. It only seems to survive because of a benefactor
( the scot trust ) which funds it' deficits.

It has to be The Guardian.
For a supposedly serious paper, it lacks credibility. It is known for the poor standard of research that go into its news analysis.
It has an agenda and the facts are not allowed to get in the way.

It is a toss up between The Sun, The Sport and The News of The World. Frankly, I don't consider them newspapers. They are what you tear up and put in the toilet when you run out of toilet paper!

The Daily Sport, Star, Sun, Mirror, News of the World.

Most of these dislpay naked women (some more than others) and others have trashy gossip about celebrities and royalty. These are supposed to NEWS papers not porn or trashy gossip.
