A test that uses a single indicator to prompt a decision: “The word ‘hopefully’ has become the litmus test to determine whether one is a language snob or a language slob” (William Safire)

It means to have a single thing be the indicator of the outcome
ex: "My litmus test on whether I'll date a guy or not is if my dog likes him"
or "I use my dog's reaction to guys as my litmus test"
kind of a pass/fail item
