Benedict Arnold was in charge of a crucial defense in the Revolutionary War. He gave troop movements to the British and made sure that his fort(I believe it was West Point) was undefended so that the British could break through. He was considered a great General for the American side, so his defection was a serious thing. While his fort was being taken, he escaped to a British ship. His wife was taken prisoner by the Americans, but at that time, the Americans were chivelous. she was released to the British about a week after her capture. But the British didn't honor Arnold like they promised. They figured he was a turncoat once, what would stop him from doing it again.
The American fort was successfully defended against the British.

Benedict Arnold was probably victim of cumbersome and delayed bureaucratic military reimbursement procedures. He was not paid in time for expenses he incurred and on the other hand was not credited for some valuable contributions to the cause of American Independence. At a certain point he decided to become an informer of the British, hand them over all the armory and supplies in West Point and George Washington himself. If you read of all the recommendations Washington gave him and reflect on the fact that we should do what's right for our country out of love and not out of greed, you will realize the caliber of his treachery. Unfortunately, these days of expediency and self-interest, many would explain away his actions as "smart", but unlucky.

He was going to hand West Point over to the British and then go be an officer in THEIR army. His plan for glory backfired though considering after the American Revolution was over, the British hated him and didn't trust him thinking he'd turn turncoat....again.

Actually, good question.

Basic answer is he pissed off George Washington.

He sold some information to the British that was out of date.

There are a number of books on the subject.
