If I remember the visuals correctly, the female sex chromosome is "crossed" and looks like an "X" while the male sex chromosome is missing one of the branches (hence, "Y").

Because their "Y" chromosome is missing one of the branches that the females have in both their "X" chromosomes, men are more likely to get certain genetic diseases.

A female with a mutation on ONE of her "X" chromosomes (she has 2) can compensate with a good version on her other one; but if a man has a mutation on his single "X" (on the branch that is missing from his "Y"), then he has no good version of the gene to use and will develop the disease.

there is no symbol on chromosomes.
they are characterised by the scientists according to some criteria as X and X for the female of human being and X & Y for the male ones.
