the suffix "ian" is often used to create an adjective to describe a group or dervied from a proper noun.
Iran--Iranian
Christ--Christian
guard--Guardian
Jung--Jungian
Hungary--Hungarian
plebe--plebian
Mars-martian
Athens--Athenian
Glasgow--Glaswegian
So Although there's no readily explainable reason WHY we say Canadian instead of Canadan, there are enough other examples to show that it is a far from anomalous label.

You're seeking consistency where, frankly, there is very little. People from new york are new yorkERS but people from iowa are iowaNS. Closer to the mark may be simply because canadian is easier to say than canadan.

Well maybe it is written that way because it is a French word and it might be the way they spell it.
