They screw up perfectly good songs... 99.9% of the time.. that one song Heaven is the only counterexample I know of. From there on, remixes are the worst in music!!!

If it's a 10 minute "dance" remix of an already danceable 4 minute song and played in a dance club, then it's fine. Otherwise, the vast majority of the time, remixes suck.
There have been a few worthwhile remixes (eg. Rush's "Tom Sawyer" for the "Small Soldiers" film, Soft Cell's 9 minute version of "Tainted Love"), but in those cases, they *add* something to the song, they don't just lengthen it.
Additional:
I heard proof of my argument tonight. I went into a convenience store, and on the radio was a "remix" (read: mutilation) of Sly and The Family Stone's song, "Everyday People". All that remained was the vocal track, the brilliant musicianship of S&TFS was gone and replaced by a techno beat. Stone's whole point of the band was to show whites, blacks and asians working together as one.

If you liked the original, and it was one of your favorites, the remix just doesn't cut it quite as much.
If you hated the original, but were forced to listen to it over and over, you warm up to the remix a lot more (unless that song doesn't fall into one of your favorite types of music either).
If you like the band (or genre of music) that does the remix, the first rule is null and void, and you will like the remix.
If it's a radical change of genre, you will like one or the other, but not both. Even if you like both types of music.
Making a remix is a band's way of showing respect for the original band. With every remix, comes another boost of sales for the original song. People need to compare.

Some are better than the original but only if they are club mixes...in other case remixes like Hotel California...is an insult to rock music!

I don't enjoy some remixes, because, I think, they destroy the quality of the real music. I ever wonder why people enjoy remixes.
