I think the bigger question is:

How can this question have been asked on Yahoo! Answers not once, but twice!!! This has already been out here.

But to answer your question, it depends on the choreography. For example, say the one that drowns is in the middle of a circle revolving around him/her. Then the middle swimmer can do their own thing, thus saving the rest from certain death.

However, if the drowning one is doing the same movement as the others, then to get a high score from the judges the rest will have to drown as well. Hey, it's a tough sport.

Only if they want to win but if 1 drowns he/she was out of sync with the others so technically they have already lost..
