There are only three reasons that a present-day Scotsman would ever wear a kilt:
1. If they are a traditionalist who wants to promote their heritage.
2. If they are attending a wedding, funeral, or other formal-dress occasions.
3. If they are barmy showboaters who want to impress tourists.
You're fine to call Scotland's female population a bunch of skirtwearers (since that will largely be true), but you're insulting a millenia-old heritage object if you say it to the male population (at least the ones who don't crossdress).
Then again, we do enjoy keeping the stereotype, as it means we will sometimes see daring tourists lifting up the sides of kilts to see if the myth is true. All I'm willing to say on this subject is that it was true hundreds of years ago, and that it served as an effective deterrant to enemy armies as our boys came charging down the hills.

You can always get away with trash talk with friends, just don't let it roll over into the pub where others can here it or you might end up in a fight. And the terrorist remark is just like the N word here in the states: Off limits these days, just too spooky. Yeah, razz your chums, that's what friends are for. Have fun and party on as long as you're not hurting others!

I don't think it's a good idea to call Irish people terrorists as you don't know who could overhear you and that's still a sore point believe me. We don't all wear skirts you know, same as not all English people morris dance, get my drift???? I agree with the last comment about going into a pub in Glasgow - you'll get your head kicked in if someone overhears you saying that mate.

Not so much racist (since Scottish isn't a different race) as prejudiced. But if your Scottish friends don't care and can take it as a joke I wouldn't worry about it.

It all depends on the relationship you have with your friends and the way it is intended. If it is just harmless banter and they can return it then great! Just be careful with it is all I can say. As a Welsh person I get all sorts of baner for it but thats all part of the fun and life in general!
