It is intended to hurt people, or make the speaker feel better than the person being talked about. Couldn't we live without?

Yes we could live without it. Unfortunately, for some, it's the only way they can build up their sense of low self esteem. By character assassination the individual who is doing the gossiping is basically pointing out character flaws within themselves that they don't want anyone else to see. It happens everywhere, everyday. It's sad.

It's just like when a comedian makes fun of people. It is done with the thought that we don't have the same faults. People like to talk about others because human beings are significant, and so referring to them is referring to a creature of free will. It is still wrong to gossip, though. I have no friends, but people gossip about me all the time. I have nothing, but people still insist on saying bad stuff about me. It's so strange...

Gossiping is restricted to some people only.Not every one can do it. People with narrow mind and with the intention to hurt the feelings of others only gossip.

Purpose of gossip is to encourage spreading discomfort to others with unpleasing and twisted stories about some others...
Intent and purpose of gossip needs to be discouraged by all means...

It gives people something to talk about. News is a known fact while gossip is still not confirmed. As you know people want to know what they don't know.

Because as humans we have flaws.. lots and lots of them. We all know this and in order to get our focus off of our own shortcomings, we point our other people to make ourselves feel better.
YES, we could all live with out it!
