Two reasons
First is that they just react to the question, and fire off a reply before bothering to read any further.
Second, and I have been caught on this, the details were not added until later.
Keep in mind, you can always add details to your question. Someone might have posted an answer before you did it.
The biggest one under catagory one I screwed up on was a question that went.
"Is it OK if I hit my wife?"
I never got to the "up for money when she gets paid" part until after I posted a flaming response. As did a bunch of others.
I sort of did an Emily Latilla "Never Mind, that's very different" thing, and amended my answer.
(shrug)
Hey, we all screw up from time to time.
I still didn't think much of the guy, but it did drastically change the question he asked and the answer I gave

Some people will only read the main question and as they are concerned for the points they will quickly answer without reading the additional details. I will always read the question the details and every answer that has been given up to that point, if I then feel that something in my own opinion has been left off or that I could offer an alternative opinion then I will answer. Have not answered questions where I believe I know the answer but it has already been given by another user or where another user in my opinion has provided the best answer.

There was a story?? Where? I hate it when people run their mouths off. Ya know I used to have this uncle, he would yap and yap and yap all day long, and you never could get a word in because he would keep yapping. But he got ran over by one of those big yellow busses downtown. Man those stinking bus drivers drive way to fast, he didn't even brake after he hit my uncle, he just kept going on and on. All that was left behind was a toupee and 47 cents that flew out of his pocket...o sorry, what was your question again?

A lot of times people have the answer in mind before they open up the question and just don't notice the rest of the details.

because some questions produce a kneejerk reaction.
I mean, for example, I read all of the question, but I didn't even bother reading anyone else's answers. Somewhere in this list, someone else could have answered exactly the same and I wouldn't even know.

To be honest I have done this before, its when the additional details take up half the page and seem to go on and on, or when they just don't make sense (my ex's girlfriends ex said that he wants my ex so then my other ex said...) It gets too confusing.

because they just can't be bothered to read and automatically think they know better and that they are really good at answering when they suck! i read the whole thing, that's the only way to give a good and detailed answer.

Because they don't want to take the time, they just want to come up with a stupid answer for some measly 2 points, Pete.
