I was first introduced to Suzanne Vega's music about twnety years ago when I was still a young teenager, and she'd only done the first two albums - there was a documentary about her on TV, and it featured songs like Luka, Marlene on the Wall, Straight Lines, Cracking etc. The next day I went out and bought my first ever CD - Suzanne Vega's first album.

Over the years, she's matured her sound and her songwriting, but throughout it all, through Days of Open Hand to Nine Objects of Desire, she's remained true to the themes that first gave her a quiet, insidious fire - succulent, sensual velvet poetry, the ordinariness of pain, disappointment and life and the magic and meaning of small moments or gestures.

I've also begun to enjoy newer female poetic singers, like Ani DiFranco, Fiona Apple and others, but I still have a soft spot for Suzanne, as one who was doing it on an international level while many of the newer breed were still kids.

I saw Suzanne play at the Cheltenham Town Hall in Gloucestershire southwest UK a few years back. It was only a small venue, there was about 300 of us there and it was one of the best nights ever. Suzanne was asking the audience to stand up and talk with her, so I did.
I asked her to sign my programme and she asked me to go down to the stage and she signed it. I then asked her to play "Luka" my favourite song and she dedicated it to me. It was a fantastic night.

A friend said my style was similar.. I don't see it personally, but there you go. He lent me aqn albumn of hers and I liked it. She is quite vitriolic at times and better when she is a little more measrued I feel.

Not necessarily easy listening, but more interesting and exciting kind of style.

If you like you can find me at myspace.com/jamesblues or the band at myspace.com/iamahabmusic ... let me know..

Yes!!! I feel the same way you do, and I don't care if I insult anyone or not!!! I get insulted all of the time for listening to my favorite music--country, etc....,but I don't give a rip!!! I just turn it up louder!!! I really do get nauseous when I hear that rap sh*t that they try to say is music!!! And, most of that stuff that they call pop!!! It just ruins what is really POP!!! WTF?

I used to like that Tom's Diner song back in the day. Was she also the one that sang, "my name is Luca.."? I liked that song too.
