Swim faster. The only way I know to increase speed is to go faster, so you should definitely swim faster, that will work.

Wow....LOL
Shaving your body hair will not increase your time unless you have the basics down and then have some time to refine them.
Swimming in broken down into this simplest equation
Push as much water as you can backwards + Minimum drag = faster swimming.
There are so many ways to increase your speed.... One great site I have found is www.about.com. Search swimming and a ton of stuff will come up for you.
Some Key elements are
1. keep your spine streamlined
2. kick with your hips not your knees
3. cut the water with your fingers first
4. refine the catch / pull part of your swim by doing hand drills (they sell hand flippers to help your hands learn where the water is supposed to be when your hand enters the water and starts pulling water back.
5. learn to breath bilaterally.

berrytiffany's answer is great.
Additionally, as you practice, try not to "flounder", feel the sleek water on your skin, feel that you actually swim but not "tear" the water. Increase the time you slide after the stroke - so you will move fast while saving energy. See?
Also, try to slide more after the jump, before the first stroke. You may notice how sportsmen swim after the jump. They make about 2/5 the track by only sliding.

Look ahead, never look at other competetors, don't go with all your head down the water only your face, make long steps with your hand and move your legs faster. You probably will be exhausted at the beginning but you'll get used to it.

maximize speed while swimming...... oil the body, wear a cap or shave your head, build up your leg muscles cuz your kick is your motor for speed, also your arms for pulling water

By practicing swimming everyday. Also in your practices, you try lifting light weights everyday. skipping ropes and eating less.
