Only few games/teams are interesting in the first round, there are lots of mediocre teams this year, do you agree?

The FIFA World Cup is the pinnacle of football excellence and the tournament must be seen and approached from a nationalistic level - managers/head-coaches have only one priority - to win at all cost. Which means they will strategize their play to suit the opposing team as they progress in the tournament... and entertaining the crowd is least of their worry.

The competition is unforgiving, the stakes skyhigh and the pressure do or die. Most of the games were played in unusually hot weather and this will have an affect however little, on the European players who are unaccustomed to playing in mid-30C. Australia demonstrated the importance of match fitness to a "t" - their 150% fitness level was the cruncher that defeated a withering Japanese side... thanks to Gus Hiddink's grueling training methods... and the expertise of the Australian Institute of Sports - worldclass!

Mediocre teams would not have made the 32 finalist list; but team USA was the most disappointing.

Besides being disappointed in the U.S.A. performance versus Czechoslovakia, I have been pleased. The Germany / Poland match was riveting. Goalkeeper Artur Boruc played a great match.

How about the Spain game? If they keep this up, they *might* get to the semis. But they always go downhill after the 2nd round.
