I get nosebleeds often. There can be months without them but then i can have months of them (i'll get them everyday at least once).
I must say, they happen when i get stressed or have exames coming. Can they be caused by a high bloodpressure?
Also, ofter i while a massive blood clot comes out. Is this a sign of anything bad? Please help!

Though some nosebleeds are caused by serious diseases, most nosebleeds are caused by dehydration and -- you got it -- stress. You may benefit from drinking more water. You should also try to avoid picking your nose nervously.

Sometimes nosebleeds occur with some frequency during adolescence. If this is your situation, I don't think you need to be too worried about them. They may be a nuisance, but they pose no true danger to your long-term health. The large clot you see emerging is probably blood that has coagulated at the back of your nose or throat.

My dad used to tell me, actually, that nosebleeds are caused by a person who has a crush on you dreaming of you in his/her sleep. I always thought this ways an extremely good -- although superstitious -- reason. Maybe someone is thinking of you passionately? Also, in Japanese culture, it is an old belief that intense sexual thoughts cause nosebleeds.

Whatever the case, I hope your nosebleeds pass soon. Carry a handkerchief with you, and be sure to get enough hydration. Best of luck to you!

I use to get lots of nosebleeds too, especially when I'm stressed or ate too much chips, chocolate or spicy foods. I went to my doctor about it, she said something like one of the blood vessels in my nose is damaged, and I had to have the blood vessel laser-ed(they just got a big laser machine and burned the end of the blood vessel so it closes and no more blood gets out). And I use to have big blood clots, the nosebleeds takes quite a while to stop and the blood is just dripping out really fast.

Nose bleeds can be caused by many things including high blood pressure and sinus infections. My daughter was hit by a car when she was 2 years old and got nose bleeds for a few years after that. Turned out a blood vessel had been damaged and she had to get it cauterized. I'd go see a doctor for sure.

the blood pressure is a small factor, there is something much bigger going on. Check your air and water, make sure it there is nothing wrong such an irritant to your respiratory system. If haven't had a broken nose and everything is checks out there, you should probably want to make an appointment with the doctor soon (more like asap).

see your Dr about the nose bleeds it could be any number of things from dry air to allergies, to anemia...it may just need to be cauterized do to blood vessels close to the surface. for relief until your apt. make sure to stay away from allergens, and nasal sprays that irritate the membranes.(there is new ones out the lubricate the membranes) Steamy showers can lubricate as well as get rid of pollen on skin and in hair.
Very important...I know some of us were taught our whole lives to pinch and hold head back...pinching is right but holding the head back is bad because it just redirects the flow down the throat, which could cause you to choke, or allow you to continue bleeding with out knowing.

Do you live in a dry area? Like Arizona, Nevada, ...? I know that living in a dry state, I get them quite often. I'm healthy, I just need to use some nose spray every so often.

Summary

Overview

I had recurrent nose bleeds on and off for years, in addition to a wide variety of other bleeding problems. Oddly, the nose bleeds would only occur in my left nostril. My eye had hemorrhaged on the left side of my face as well. I went to see a wide variety of different doctors for these problems, but for years no one had any solutions.

After many years I finally found out, through a combination of my own research and advice from a knowledgeable doctor and physical therapist, that there were a variety of causes that had been contributing to my nose bleeds. These were:

1) I had an inherited genetic disorder where easy bleeding is one of the traits. It is estimated that inherited bleeding disorders effect a significant portion of the population, though in my experience doctors seldom are aware that nose bleeds and other bleeding problems may be symptoms of an inherited disorder.

2) I had a vitamin K deficiency. Vitamin K is needed to clot the blood, so without enough vitamin K people tend to have nose bleeds and all sorts of other bleeding problems - heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia) in women, easy bruising, bleeding gums, hematuria, etc. (Also see my section on menorrhagia for more on this topic.)

3) I had a uneven shoulder muscles from scoliosis and pectus excavatum causing constricted blood vessels. The muscles on the left side of my shoulder were overly tight and overdeveloped. As such they were constricting my veins and arteries on that side of my body, causing high blood pressure on just the left side of my head. This was why my nose bleeds occurred just on my left side. My physical therapist figured this out for me. It was the same reason my arm would go numb just on my left side. It was from tight muscles putting pressure on my nerves.

After I fixed all of these problems, my nose bleeds stopped. It used to be very disturbing to have blood start dripping from my nose, at any hour of the day, for no apparent reason. I've been very fortunate to have found people, books and web sites to help me piece all of the factors causing my nose bleeds together. I put up this web site to help other people who may have epistaxis from some of the same causes.

Nosebleeds and Vitamin K

The following links contain information about vitamin K deficiency as a cause of nosebleeds:

Vitamin K deficiency - from emedicine - "Bleeding is the major symptom, especially in response to minor or trivial trauma. Any site can be involved, including mucosal and subcutaneous bleeding, such as epistaxis, hematoma, gastrointestinal bleeding, menorrhagia, hematuria, gum bleeding, and oozing from venopuncture sites. Easy bruisability also is observed."

The Merck Manual on Vitamin K - "Easy bruisability and mucosal bleeding (especially epistaxis (nosebleeds)), GI hemorrhage, menorrhagia, and hematuria (blood in the urine) occur in vitamin K deficiency."

I've noticed that many web sites state that nose bleeds from minor trauma are normal. I question whether this is really true. There's a big difference between what's "normal" and what is "common". Many people these days suffer from obesity, but just because that is a common condition does not make it normal.

Perhaps the people who get nose bleeds from minor trauma are also vitamin K deficient. Vitamin K deficiencies may be common, as noted in the next section, but that doesn't make them normal. I seriously doubt having blood spurt out of your nose frequently for no apparent reason is ever a desirable condition.

The only book I ever found that had advice on a dietary cure for my nosebleeds was the book Prescription for Nutritional Healing. It has a whole section on nosebleeds, including a wide variety of dietary treatment suggestions. The list in this book on foods to eat with vitamin K and foods to avoid that have salicylates
