Dark elbows and knees are dues to the friction between these parts and external surfaces such as desk, furniture, dust ... etc.

They can disappear with time provided you follow the following:

1. always scrub these areas while bathing or in the shower. use a loofah or a pumice stone.
2. after the bath/shower apply some thick cream (nivea blue or kamil)
3. I use a home prepared formula and it is very good: put equal amounts of glycerin, lemon juice, rose water in a small bottle. After you bath/shower, shake well and apply to these areas. you will notice improvement.
4. I recommend that if you live in a dry, hot, dusty environment, wear long sleeves whenever possible. The more you expose your skin to external factors, the more it dries up.

Your knees and elbows may just be dry and the dark color the result of the buildup of dead skin cells. I would try an alpha hydroxy cream or moisturizer. It will help to exfoliate dead skin cells and moisturize the skin underneath. Alpha hydroxy lotions are also known to lighten skin imperfections because it promotes the generation of new skin cells. You can buy these products at any major department or grocery store.
The only home remedy i have ever heard of to lighten skin is lemon juice, but I have never tried it myself.
I don't think exercise will have any effect one way or the other unless part of your regime includes leaning on your elbows or kneeling. These may be causing the problem then because your skin may be trying to protect itself from the constant pressure by toughening up much like callouses on the feet. The lotions I listed above will still help if you suspect this to be the cause of the problem.

Good Luck.
