There are 3 types of sanders that can be rented at home depot or Lowe's a drum sand a pad sander and a orbital sanderdont use the drum sander it takes off to much and you need pratice

This will be tough, as the grain runs in both directions, if the problem is scratches , try using Laquer Retarder with a rag to rub out the Scratches-

i hope its a small floor. to do it right you almost have to disassemble the whole floor.
