Originally, there was a need for milkmen to deliver milk to people's doors every day because refrigerators were still uncommon appliances in households those days, so the milk would spoil if people just bought the milk and left it at room temperature. But now, with fridges being necessities, there's no more need for milkmen, who would also charge money for their services and were liable to being robbed.
But actually, there are still milkmen in the UK and Ireland!

I am just guessing here but I think it was because the milk would spoil sitting out on the steps or someone would put something in your milk. And lets face it now days would you drink milk that had been out on your porch for sevral hours? I mean Hello how good could it be. And it could be to bring cost down, I mean milk companies had to provide the milk plus some guy who had to deliver it.

it was so early in the morning and everyone knows around 4 am people fart a lot more in their sleep and so at 4 am everyone on the block would be farting a lot in unison and the collective smell was so foul they had to quit delivering and wait for people to wake up go get their own milk

modernity, they call it. 'things of the past' are not a good idea for new society. they think: 'milk at your door? how backward! much better to follow the tide'.

I think they still do in very small towns. Just not in populated areas any more.
