Cuz if it was played with 23 there would be un-even teams and if it was played with 24, someone would probably come on here and say "Why is football played by 24 people and not more or less".
22 is just the way god made it!

Ever heard of beach football? It is played bare footed... number of player can be less than 11 for each team..... 22 players? Thats FIFA adoption with the pitch design.

Actually the maximum amount of players on the pitch for each team is eleven (excluding substitutes), one of whom must be the goalkeeper. Competition rules may state a minimum number of players required to constitute a team; this is usually seven. The reasons for 11 is lost in history but was probably decided for the sake of having a standard. Nice question.

It can be played with less players. Example if one of the players gets 2 yellow cards he gets ejected from the game and his team has to play with only 10 players for the rest of the game. Also if a player gets a red card he will get ejected and his team also plays only with 10 players.

it can be played with less, it depends if on the local association. for international football it's eleven but sometimes small leagues play seven-s-side matches.

there's more than 22 people actually.... think lines men (2) and ref (1) so on the pitch at one time there's actually 25 people....
