No, we're not trying to be greedy (at least not all of us). I believe Christmas has gotten too commercial but that is mainly due to the fact that so many people spend soooo much money on something that is meant to be meaningful.
Think about it: The average adult spends over $200 per child every Christmas and over $500 in 'celebrating' it (decorations, food, parties, etc.) A family of 4 will easily spend $1000 in the name of Christmas.
Christmas is meant to be a time for family and giving, yes. However, there is SO MUCH MORE than material things to be given and to more than just 'family'.

I think some people don't buy gifts because they think things have gotten too commercial, however did that same person used to buy gifts or have they always been a scrooge?
I also think that a lot of people have stopped buying gifts because other people feel obligated, and vise versa. Christmas isn't about obligation, greed, keeping up with the Joneses, who bought the most expensive gift, or any of that stuff, but thats what people are turning it into. We only buy for immediate family, and send cards to all our friends, and participate in secret Santa at work. Otherwise at the seasons end, we would be in debt, and that just doesn't work for me.

I used to think that Xmas actually meant something but after working through the holiday season at Target I now know that the holiday season is meant for stores to make mad money. I saw so many people buying hundreds of dollars worth of toys and things that are just generally useless. Xmas is just another opportunity for marketing strategies to be tried. In all fairness, Target does donate $20 milion a week to charity, and a lot of peopel that come in are doing purchase orders for adopted kids or donating the toys to charity but still.... It is everyone else.

The people who annoy me most are people who call Christmas "Xmas". What in the hell is Xmas? Then they think it's too commercialized. It's way beyond that. I used to do a live pageant every CHRISTmas with the help of my husband and friends. It was wonderful - the whole town joined in. But when he died I moved to a larger place and without his help I can no longer do it. But it brought the spirit of CHRISTmas back to a lot of people

Many people in today's society has lost touch of the true meaning of Christmas. This day is a very special birthday, the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. His special day is being clouded up by Santa Claus and other things not even associated with His birthday!

As for being too commercial, it is. Back when my parents were little and their parents before them. People didn't see anything related to Christmas until after Thanksgiving. Now a days, we are bombarded by Christmas ornaments, trees, cards, wrapping, and so on as early as July!!! The constant commercials of toys and games for Christmas and the magazines having Christmas ads and the stores are half decorated for Halloween and Christmas during the summer months is down right appaulling to me!!

After months of hearing about Christmas and listening to Christmas music in the stores, a person can lose interest in Christmas when it is here. To me all of this is sad.

We as humans, should have the right and the say so, to not allow the stores, t.v., magazines and media itself, to allow this constant bombardment done to us and our children. Instead, they should talk more about the true meaning of Christmas and the potential impact the mere knowledge of knowing who Jesus was on earth and the importance He still can have on every one that is living on this planet.

Yes Christmas is a time for giving and it is better to give than to receive. Unfortunately people get way to carried away with that sometimes too.

In my family we thank God and His Son Jesus, for giving us good health and for providing us another holiday we can spend together again. Do you?

ummmmmm....Christmas IS too commercial......it's about giving, but it's going too far with people maxing out credit cards and going into debt. Materialism kind of goes against the spiritual teachings of Jesus Christ.. Remember how mad he got at the marketplace in the temple? He'd be just as angry today, people buying X-Box360s and designer perfume when millions are starving, all in His name. Christmas is a time for giving. Xmas is something else altogether.

yes! and A BIG FAT YES! my pocket book sure can't handle it and then I fill like a cheap skate. Cause if u give a small gift they know your poor. and that is what Christmas is not about how big the gift but it is how big the gift or how jazzed up it is and it sucks cause I 'm not a cheap skate it's just I want to give to everyone and I try to make it go far and it's not fare that people even go there about how they don't like there gift. that is so selffish when some one that is trying to give from there heart.. So I started making stuff and if they don't like it I just don't give to that person any more why they don't know the what it means anyway....

Christmas now is so commercialised....i get gifts from people just because i give them. Am not complaining about getting the gifts but i feel that people should not just buy something just for the sake of buying something...they should think through what the person is like...it's not the amount of money spent on it that makes it meaningful but the amount of time you spend thinking what is an appropriate gift. I buy gifts to show them that i appreciate their friendship and want to thank them for being there for me...

Christmas is too commercialized. Christmas is about celebrating the birth of Christ. And enjoying being with your Family and Friends, especially Family, gathering around together eating, and sharing their love for each other and singing songs of joy to the Lord.

Christmas has become to commercial. The stores have Christmas up before Thanksgiving is even here. Where I am at we have Thanksgiving and Christmas in the stores at the sametime from the get go.

I still purchase for Christmas. I always reminded my kids what Christmas is all about.
