Planets are constantly moving and changing. Magnetic fields and brightness, reversing rotations, varying atmospheres, geography, etc. Both position and composition of each planet changing over millions of years will move them further away or ever closer to each other and it is possible that conditions may be available for new life to form and grow.

In a few billion years the Sun will expand into a "red giant" and engulf at least the closest planets, including Earth. Then it will basically blow up and turn into a "white dwarf" later (and/or a black hole?).

In the meantime, various debris will hit the planets and change them. Hopefully we will be ready for the next big piece of debris to hit Earth.

Other cosmic events could also conceivably alter the solar system.

Finally, if we get really technologically advanced we might start altering the planets ourselves. We could even conceivably take control of the sun and stop if from turning into a red giant later, so I guess theoreticaly we could "preserve" our solar system!

Good question: Actually it is possible the planets are in an unstable situation, and we can't tell what will happen years from now, because it is impossible for us to use Newton's Field equations for three or more bodies at a time.

This means the planet's orbits could eventually change or decay altogether.

Dear Karl I am just a finite man so what I think you might not believe so I would be wasting my time . But this source from the Holy Bible tells exactly what will take place Please read all of 2 Peter Chapter 3. I will only quote the part pertinent to your question. " ... (verse 10 NIV) but the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare ( Verse 11) Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be . You ought to live holy and godly lives,(verse12) as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire and the elements will melt in the heat. But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth , the home of righteousness."

The planets will stay pretty much as they are now, but in 4-5 billion years the sun will become a red giant and swallow up Mercury and Venus as it expands.

yes the planets will/should stay the way they are unless tampered with. but in approximently 5 billion years the sun will explode and the entire solar system will be gone except for a once glorious sun reduced to almost nothing.

I think the whole universe will form a minute cosmic egg of the stablest mass known, that is Fe-56. But after that, there will be no change in anything with time. I dont know what's in your mind, but I think so.
