I read somewhere that chocolate is good for a cough. Is this true?

Someone told me there was an ingredient in chocolate that help supress a cough and that pharmaceutical companies are trying to extract it.

Chocolate (or, more corretly, the cocoa powder component of chocolate) contains large amounts of substances that moden medical research is "discovering" to be quite good for general health and well-being.

I say "discovering" because many of these benefits have been known for hundreds if not thousands of years but have never been accepted by modern medicine.

One of these "folk remedy" benefits is chocolate's ability to calm coughs. This is due to the presence in chocolate of the chemical theobromine. Theobromine belongs to a class of chemicals called methylxanthines that also includes caffeine. The theobromine acts on the central nervous system to provide relief, but it is not known exactly how it works.

And yes, theobromine is more effective than most of the ingredients found in OTC (over-the-counter) cough medicines.

I haven't heard about it being used for coughs. Dark chocolate contains antioxidants which are beneficial to our health. It also helps to lower blood pressure and is good for heart disease. But don't overdo it. You only need a little. Too much will increase your saturated fats, which is bad for the body.

I heard that too, but I can't remember where. I think a doctor said its actually more effective than cough medicine.
