The United States in their zeal to be the best in the world in making money never bothered about health and safety within their own country. In Washington Dc , still there are traces of chemical weapons stored and now leaking in the waterways after WWI.In Buffalo, the water is polluted by mining operations and steel mills that many people suffer from Cancer. Many people unfortunately are ignorant of business practises. In California, recently they found an oil company drilling oil from under a school , leading possibly to the discovery of cancer in the neighbourhood. Many countries don't allow that but then again, the USA is a vast country and hard to monitor!

Then they developed insecticides and herbicides that were dangerous to the environment. This was before EPA. Now that we have EPA the pollution is less and they are overriding their authority. But in general look for clean, clear water. You have to go to foeign countries to find any.

The problem is actually getting much better. Many of the rivers and estuaries that were poluted in the 70's are clear now. This is due to heavy EPA restrictions and fines. The problem now is in China, where the government isn't so concerned about the environment.

I seems to be a problem all over the world. I think there are too many humans and their waste isn't managed to advantage. Also industrial by-products have been going into the waterways. It could be turned around if government took the necessary steps to enforce better management.
