It would be the Godfather movies except for the fact that Godfather 3 was stupid. Star Wars was kinda ruined by the Ewoks in ROTJ. Harry Potter isn't a trilogy. Matrix 2 and 3 weren't nearly as good as 1. Xmen has limited appeal. Shrek is a kid's movie. Spiderman is fun to watch, but it will be out of date 20 years from now.
That leaves Lord of the Rings as the best ever trilogy. I don't think we'll see another trilogy like it for a LONG time.

My list:
1) Lord of the Rings. (Each story was excellent, each subsequent one was better then the previous one, excellent story line that tied all three together. By far the best trilogy I have ever seen other then
2)Star Wars, Empire Strike Back, Return of the Jedi. Same reasons as above but dated. And I didn't enjoy Empire Strike Back.
3)Matrix and the only reason it wasn't higher on my list is cuz each subsequent movie was a bit weaker then its successor. It ranks high at #3 for me because Matrix the first one was incredible. I can't remember a movie over the last 7 yrs that has wow'ed me like the original Matrix both in intellectual content and visual technological achievement.
4)Harry Potter - number 4 because they were descent movies,
Honorable mention - Once Upon A China with Jet Li
Other mentions - Rocky (okay okay I did like 1-3), Terminator was good. Aliens (only 1 and 2 are worth mentioning). Star Trek (yeah we are all new generation now but it was a good series for its time) Lethal Weapon (can't leave that one out). Indiana Jones (good) Mission Impossible (3rd one a let down). Xmen (3rd on a let down)
Praying for: Chronicles of Riddick
OMG Red, White, Blue slow slow slow slow slow

Harry Potter is not a trilogy. Neither is Star Wars. Harry Potter was meant and is still meant to be 7 movies. Star wars is 6 movies.
