Tap is fun, but it is harder than it looks. Even if you were a drummer (which I see you are not), it is still a challenge to get your feet to follow the tap steps. So the beginners classes start show - simple "shuffle step" stuff - which is certainly easy, but you may not feel as though you're doing the REALLY fun stuff until you advance. However, if you go in knowing this and stick with it, then it eventually pays off down the road.
I would say that both tap and hip-hop would fit what you're looking for.

Hi Bruce. As a dance teacher and experienced dancer, I may suggest ballet. Because it is the basis of all dances. It's hard at first, you can enroll at the begginers because I'm thinking that you need to know the basic foot and arm positions, for balance, muscle strenghtening and contractions, flexibility, posture and most of all clarity and coordination of movements. After that you can shift to other dances that will catch your interest. But for now these are the things that you need to work on, ok. Hope I helped you.

You should definitely do a dance that is fun for you. Try tap to see if you like it. But before you sign up for expensive lessons ask to watch a class from the sidelines first. Also look at jazz and social dancing classes. You must like the instructor as well as the dance.
Good luck.

Tap and ballet are nice, but where are you ever going to use them. Try Ballroom.
Most ballroom studios have group beginner lessons. They are cheap, everyone is a beginner and they will introduce you to several dances: Swing, Hustle, Foxtrot, Waltz, Tango, Samba, Rumba, Cha-Cha, Mambo.
The rhythm ones will serve you well in the clubs and the smooth will impress at special events (parties, weddings, etc)

I would suggest Jazz(hip-hop or beginning tecnique) or Social Latin (salsa, cha-cha, mambo, etc). Fun, high energy, easy basic steps and a good foundation for moving into other dance types. Ballet can be very difficult for a beginner. Good rythmn will make jazz or latin easier. Social dancing is easy to keep up at clubs, social dance parties, and drop-in classes. Any other type you're more likely to lose skills and it's harder to keep up training.
And social dance/partner dance/ballroom needs more guys!!!

ballet! ballet seems like the foundation of any dance. it gives u grace, patience, flexibility, muscles, and strength. if u stick with ballet long enough, you will remember it the rest of you life. some people want to learn super fun dances, and at first ballet doesnt seem like that. well its not the funnest at times, but u are guaranteed to learn more faster than other dance classes. good luck!

Tap is too much for a beginner and I don't consider that true dance. Try ballet if you like it or hip-hop or jazz.

Ballet is the fundamental of all dance- so if you've never taken any kind of dance before, ballet is the answer.
