I work on computers all the time and I say Dell is the ultimate best. I've help over 10 people get a dell and they are all happy. Where-as I have had to work on many others. I'm not saying Dell has no problems, but they are very few.
Gateway is horrible! They are made cheap and fall apart, Emachines was bought by Gateway, and they are no better.
HP and Compaq merged, and they are OK but don't get their Compaq brand though.
Toshiba and Sony are good computers, but are difficult to fix or upgrade.
If you look at almost any Corporations, most use Dell computers. Dell is high quality, low cost, and highly upgradable.
All though you may receive opposite responses about Dell, they are top of the line.
And no I'm not a Dell Representative, just a happy customer of 10 years, and a computer lover.

Get a laptop with a AMD processor. Not so important is
brand.
You won't be disappointed.
Stay away form Dell.
I've had good luck with toshiba and sony, even hp or compaq
with compaq though you get what you pay for so don't go with
there entry level pricing.

Dell's are just everywhere and its for good reason. They make on hell of a product. The prices are simply the best as well because when you sell the most you buy the parts the cheapest so that benefits the buyers. CHEAP notebooks. Some are as low as $499 right now. I've had my 5 years, no problem, Like a Tank! Thats what I call it, cause nothing can destroy it. It also runs some of the games that regular computer would not. My sister had A Sony VAIO, but it broke, mine is still awesome and never had problems.

I think Dell is one of the best brands. We just bought one. And while shopping for one...I heard which one's are good, and which one's are bad....DO NOT buy an HP or a Compaq. (Hp and Compaq merged, so they are basically the same now). My husband also builds computers and works on them...and he told me about those two brands...so don't buy those. Dell seems to be the best though.

Toshiba was long considered the best, but now I think it really is up to what components and the Cpu you get.
