Perhaps it's your shadow, seeing as you say it's not a tree...

Answering 'a tree' makes sense though:
A tree grows up: reaching for the sky.
A tree has roots: clutching the ground.
A tree has leaves: leave/leaf is a play on words...
A tree's trunk is cylindrical: cylinders are round...another play on words.

Although, I can justify 'your shadow' similarly:
A shadow can be long or short depending upon the angle of the sun: reaching for the sky.
A shadow must be cast against something, and can never stand independently: clutching to the ground.
If it's overcast, you can't always see a your shadow: sometimes it leaves.
Even if you can't see it, your body still blocks light in some way. :It's always there, even if not visible...

Heck I don't know!! Seeing as you say it's not a tree! ; )

But I'll guess that it's humans ... we're always 'reaching for the sky' - but we're usually clutching the ground! Sometimes people leave and go into space - but there are still loads of us left here!

I tried to think of something round, but all I could think of was the planet Earth ... and that never leaves! Neither does the moon, or the sun ... but maybe you mean the SUN? It doesn't leave, but it goes out of sight? But the sun doesn't clutch the ground... OOOOhh!! My achy brain!! What have you DONE to me??!❀
