Which do you do first, seaming or heming, when you're making clothes? I can't find the answer anywhere. Am I the only one in the world who doesn't know?

Now, wouldn't it have been nice to know all of this before I hemmed and THEN seamed a dress for medieval reenacting? It's too bad that there's not a commercial pattern that's any good for that. I might have known a lot sooner! For some reason, the online instruction sites don't tell you little things like that. Now I've got an early-medieval period dress with the sides about five inches lower than the front. It's ridiculous.

You do the seams first and then press the garment before pinning up ready to do the hem. Reason for this is that when you are sewing the seams there is a small amount of movement of fabric and if you had already hemmed each piece it would end up with some pieces higher than others.

The hem is taken up in one go at the end.

Seams, because you want the hems to be smooth over everything. Look at the the hem on the pants or skirt that you have on, which will be done in that order if they are done correctly, and they nearly always are.

I stitch the seam jointly and then I zigzag both aspect of the seam autonomous of the different. (bypass down both aspect). Then I press the seam open. the reason I do it in this order is because i do not opt to attend to the piece lots and that i do not choose the zigzagging to type of assemble up the piece so as that it would not more desirable healthy properly. many cases I only use pinking shears (i do not understand if I spelled that top), yet they're the scissors that make a zig zag decrease on the fabric. I decrease out the garment with those scissors and then i do not could difficulty myself with the zigzagging. exceptionally no matter if that's a childs gown and out of cotton. relies upon on the fabric if it will be useful for you. that is what people did till now zig-zag stitch on machines. worked for me.

Seams almost always go in clothing first. Hems should be the last step before pressing them. In curtains and drapes the hems almost always go in first.

My grandmother was a head seamstress in Brooklyn, New York a very long time ago. I remember she always did the seams first.

Seams. I have never even heard of anyone considering doing it backwards. But rest assured, when you buy patterns, they come with step-by-step instructions.
