In football (soccer), an off-side is when the player receiving the ball has only one player from the opposition (goal keeper/other player) before him and the opponent's goal. However, this applies as off-side only at the time when the ball is being passed to the said player and if (s)he is in the opponent's half of the field. If there is only one defender before him on receipt of the ball, it is not called an off-side.

The goalkeeper has nothing to do with it. There must be an opposing player between you and the goal, and you must be at least EVEN with a second opposing player.
In 99% of the cases, the first opposing player happens to be the goalkeeper, but only because of where he stands on the field. If by chance there was no goalie (injury, bad field position), then one of the defenders would be the last opposing player and a second defender would have to be at least even.
And to preclude another question, a player is judged off side when the ball is kicked, not when it arrives at the offending player.

Assuming Team A and Team B are the two sides, in order that Team A player do not stay near Team B goal side in anticipation to receive the ball and when all the other members of Team B other than goal keeper are in advance positions looking/playing with the football, trying their level best to put the goal or in defence. In otherwords if one or more players of Team A decide to occupy the TEAM B side beyond all the players of Team B, excepting goal keeper , they can easily put the goal with any stray ball being kicked in a long distance from Team A members.
Whereas with the football one can go anywhere to any depth even beyond team B members but without in posession of ball
or even before the ball arrives in Team B side is off side.If ball is already inside Team B goal keeper area etc one can rush to get the posessuion of ball stationing oneself in advance to receive the ball is off side.

It is not an offence in itself to be in an offside position.
A player is in an offside position if:
he is nearer to his opponents' goal line than both the ball and the second last opponent
A player is not in an offside position if:
he is in his own half of the field of play
he is level with the second last opponent
he is level with the last two opponents
Commiting an Offside Offence
A player in an offside position is only penalised if, at the moment the ball touches or is played by one of his team, he is, in the opinion of the referee, involved in active play by:
interfering with play
interfering with an opponent
gaining an advantage by being in that position
No Offence
There is no offside offence if a player receives the ball directly from:
a goal kick
a throw-in
a corner kick
Infringements/Sanctions
For any offside offence, the referee awards an indirect free kick to the opposing team to be taken from the place where the infringement occurred.

In soccer?! Offside is when a player A is being inside the B goal-area alone with the B keeper and he gets a ball centered from his A-mates, and none of the defending B team is between him and the A-goal (keeper not included)

Basically if your attacking in Mid Feild and you pass the ball to a forward, the forward must be behind the last line of defense when the ball has made contact with the passes foot he can then run behind defense and score.
Quick!!

its simple actually. in your opponents half, if u r found waiting for the ball to come to u rather than u chasing the ball with no defenders between u and the goal( except the keeper), u r offside. if u reach a spot earlier than the ball, the flag is raised.
hope i made it simple enuff :-)

if you're closer to the opposing goal than the 10 players (not goalie) of the other team when the ball is passed (kicked) to you, its off sides

When a player is judged beyond the last, non-goalie opposing player before the ball is struck (in order to be passed forward) by a teammate.
(Much easier to diagram than to explain.)
