AMBIGUITY ALREADY!
I have learned that to have the white hard and the yolk still runny but warm you PUT THE EGG IN WATER WHICH IS ALREADY BOILING FOR EXACTLY 3 MINUTES...hence the three minute egg and the three minute timers you can buy.
By having a SPECIFIC starting point, IF the 3 minutes is NOT long enough, you can always adjust this, and have only wasted an egg or two. ALSO, it will matter SLIGHTLY the SIZE of the egg.
I do think that there is one little ammendment to this answer though. You should put the egg (or 2 or 3) in the water when the water is room temperature or fresh from the tap. You THEN put the pot with eggs and water on the element. Element is on HIGH. ONCE THE WATER STARTS TO BOIL, as SOON as you see the water boiling, you start timing and time for 3 minutes removing the eggs IMMEDIATELY after 3 minutes FROM the water.
Again, try this exacting method and if it is not BANG ON for the SPECIFIC EGG SIZE you use, then adjust by about 15 seconds either side of 3 minutes.
GOOD LUCK
